Pitting Indian Furniture Against Imported Furniture

Living room furniture

Today, furniture-shoppers are in a quandary about which material they should settle for and whether they should opt for slickly-finished imported furniture or veer towards good old Indian furniture. The question is a logical one and the answer, elusive. Let’s take a look at what makes imported furniture different from its Indian counterparts and discuss which one is better and why.

It’s a Material WorldLiving_room_furniture

In order to understand this, let’s pan across the different materials available and how they match up against each other. Imported furniture may be made of MDF, rubberwood or pine. Medium Density Fibreboard or MDF is a high-grade, composite material that is fabricated from recycled wood fibres that are bonded with resin. It can withstand humidity and climatic changes very effectively.

Rubberwood comes from the rubber tree and is a species of wood with a dense grain. It is ideal for areas such as kitchens but absolutely a no-no for outdoor usage. Pine is sturdy, stiff and shock-resistant, very smooth to the touch but tends to wear over time. Customers who buy this furniture are aware that they are buying a product that is not a high-quality one and are willing to use and discard it within a short while. In effect, it is not comparable to Indian wooden furniture.

All Finish, Polish and Shine

Indian_furniture_paintedImported furniture is made of any of these materials and it must be said that most of the pieces that come in from abroad are finished to perfection and look and feel rich. At the other end of the scale is Indian furniture, which more often than not, is made of local hardwoods like teak or sheesham. These are sturdy, strong and have a beautiful grain but the finish may not be as smooth.

When Cost Matters

Imported furniture is cheaper than Indian furniture only when we compare the very low end range of furniture. They also offer a cost advantage over Indian Furniture because they are machine-made and more run-of-the-mill. The exceptions to cheap East Asian furniture are the pieces that come from Germany and Italy. These tend to be more expensive than wooden furniture that is made in India.

Qualms about Quality

In the long run, imported furniture is more susceptible to getting water damaged. Furniture made of this material is generally constructed with brads or staples instead of screws and cannot withstand wear and tear like Indian furniture can. However wood gets affected by changes in humidity and weather and requires careful polishing to keep it looking new.

Installation and Refinishing

MDF is heavier than wood which makes the latter easier to install. The veneer on MDF is only 1/16th” thick. Try to sand it and its pressed fibre will get exposed. The concept of refinishing or repairing imported furniture is almost non-existent and in most cases, replacement is the only option. Even on the refinishing front, wood comes out tops. It can be sanded-down, refinished or repaired with comparative ease.
